The Muslim community often avoids the topic of mental illness. Muslim households tend to shy away from the topic of mental health, unless they are dealing with a crisis themselves. This is unfortunate, as mental illness impacts people of all religions, including Muslims. As with physical illness, it is much less detrimental to prevent mental illness, rather than cure it. My hope is that my memoir can illustrate the way that mental illness can impact the people who seem least likely to have it, as well as reveal warning signs of eating disorders, and potentially offer a path to recovery.
